Statement of APA President Renée Binder, M.D., on Second Circuit Court Ruling Regarding Mental Health Parity

ARLINGTON, Va., — The American Psychiatric Association (APA) released the following statement from APA President Renée Binder, M.D., in response to today’s ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in N.Y. State Psychiatric Ass’n v. UnitedHealth Grp. The New York State Psychiatric Association (NYSPA) is the APA’s chapter in the Empire State.

Today’s decision gives professional organizations, such as APA and NYSPA, the right, on behalf of its members and their patients, to sue for mental health parity violations, which is important because patients are often unable to speak out for themselves. This ruling gives us hope that the Mental Health Parity Act of 2008 will now be enforced."

Opting Out of Medicaid Expansion: Impacts on Behavioral Health Services at Community Health Centers

ARLINGTON, Va. — A cost analysis of states’ decisions to opt out of Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act shows these states will receive less revenue and have a reduced capacity to serve people with mental illness. If all 50 states expanded Medicaid by 2020, an additional 70,500 behavioral health services would be provided that year. The study is published online today in Psychiatric Services in Advance.

The study focused on community health centers, a key source of medical and behavioral health services in underserved communities because they serve all patients regardless of the ability to pay. WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 16, 2015) – Hoffman-Madison Waterfront, the master developer of the world-class mixed-use waterfront community The Wharf, today announced the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the world’s largest psychiatric organization, will occupy 63,000 square feet of Class A office space at 800 Maine Avenue. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser made the announcement at today’s “bottoming out” event at The Wharf. The APA, currently at 1000 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, Va., signed a 10-year lease and is expected to take occupancy between November 1, 2017 and January 1, 2018.
