ARLINGTON, Va. – Men who are heavy marijuana users at ages 18 and 19 are 40 percent more likely to die by age 60 than men reporting no history of marijuana use, according to a study out today in AJP in Advance.

A previous study of the same population showed no association between marijuana use and risk of death. However, with the 40-year time frame of the current study, the men had reached ages at which the health-related, harmful effects of marijuana use (e.g., cancer, pulmonary disease and coronary heart disease) were more likely to be seen.

Edison Manrique-Garcia, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm examined the records of more than 45,000 Swedish men entering compulsory military training in 1969–1970 and identified deaths between training entry and 2011.

April 20, 2016 – The nation’s leading mental health professional organizations are expressing dismay over the spate of recent bills and laws that would allow for individuals and businesses to deny services, employment and housing to LGBT people under the guise of religious freedom. Other states are proposing and enacting laws that would require transgender people to use public restrooms based on their sex assigned at birth. Also of serious concern is a bill recently passed by the Tennessee General Assembly that would allow mental health professionals to deny services to LGBT people based on a counselor’s religious beliefs.

Over the past decade, the integration of behavioral health and general medical services has been shown to improve patient access, outcomes, and reduce stigma related to mental health.

More than 80 randomized control trials have identified one model in particular – the Collaborative Care Model – as being effective and efficient in improving patients’ health.
