WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Oct. 16, 1844, 13 superintendents of U.S. institutions for people with mental illness came together in Philadelphia for a four-day meeting that led to the creation of the Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane. It was the first national medical society in the U.S. In 1892, the Association’s name was changed to the American Medico-Psychological Association, and in 1921, it became the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

“The APA’s founders were determined to provide their patients with psychosocial care in a humane environment,” said APA President Bruce Schwartz, M.D. “They gathered to talk about the common challenges they faced and to advance treatments to improve the lives of their patients. Washington – For transgender individuals, gender-affirming surgery can lead to long-term mental health benefits, according to new research published online today in The American Journal of Psychiatry. The study found that among transgender individuals with gender incongruence, undergoing gender-affirming surgery was significantly associated with a decrease in mental health treatment over time.

Among individuals with gender incongruence, just more than 70% had received hormone...

Dubrow, lead attorney on the amicus brief. “These changes weaken protections for migrant children, resulting in more...

The Department of Homeland Security issued a final regulation that would roll back critical protections for immigrant families established under the Flores Settlement Agreement.

In response, the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of Physicians, and American Psychiatric Association issued this statement:

Our organizations, which represent more than 452,100 physicians and medical students, are united in our strong opposition to the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) final rule rolling back protections for immigrant children and their families put in place by the Flores Settlement Agreement. Under the new rule, immigrant children and their parents could be held in federal detention facilities that may be...
