APA Gives Back Program Benefits Skyland Trail

ATLANTA – As part of the American Psychiatric Association’s annual “APA Gives Back” program, APA President Renée Binder, M.D., presented a donation of $20,000 to Skyland Trail during the Opening Session of the APA Annual Meeting at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Now in its seventh year, APA Gives Back provides an opportunity for APA, its members, and Annual Meeting attendees to support a community mental health organization in the city hosting the Annual Meeting. Skyland Trail is a nationally recognized, nonprofit mental health treatment organization serving adults through evidence-based psychiatric treatment and education. Skyland Trail President and CEO Beth Finnerty and Chief Medical Officer Ray Kotwicki, M.D., M.P.H., an APA member, were on hand to accept the check on behalf of Skyland Trail.

“The APA Gives Back program is a tangible way for us to help the local community,” Binder said. “It allows us to make a difference long after our Annual Meeting is over. “More than $12,000 has been donated so far to Skyland Trail this year through the generosity of APA members and meeting attendees. APA is pleased to match that amount.”

Skyland Trail is a voluntary treatment center in Atlanta focused on helping people with complex mental health issues to grow, recover and reclaim their lives. Skyland Trail’s holistic model provides integrated mental, medical, and social services that help clients develop strategies to improve mental health, physical wellness, independence, and relationships with family and friends. Each client works with a dedicated psychiatrist and primary counselor along with a multidisciplinary team of experts.

Since 2010, APA and members and attendees have donated more than $75,000 through the APA Gives Back program to organizations in the cities where the APA holds its annual meetings.

Donations can be made to Skyland Trail during the 2016 Annual Meeting until May 18 through the meeting registration process.
