Theresa M. Miskimen Assumes Post as APA Assembly Speaker

ARLINGTON, Va., May 25, 2017 – At the close of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Annual Meeting on May 24 in San Diego, Theresa M. Miskimen, M.D., assumed the role of Speaker of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Assembly of District Branches.

Theresa Miskimen, M.D., is currently the Vice President for Medical Services at University Behavioral Health Care in New Jersey and Professor of Psychiatry at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers University. She is a member of the editorial advisory board for Clinical Psychiatry News and served on the executive board of the American Society of Hispanic Psychiatrists and the advisory board for the National Resource Center for Hispanic Mental Health. Miskimen is board certified in psychiatry and addiction psychiatry, is a Distinguished Fellow of the APA and a past president of the New Jersey Psychiatric Association.

"I am honored to have been elected to serve as the Speaker of the Assembly,” Miskimen said. “ I will ensure that our group is at the ready to bring forth and tackle issues that have an effect on our constituents and the individuals we provide care for; issues such as drug monitoring programs, patient advocacy activities and Maintenance of Certification,” she said. “Further, I consider it essential that for our organization to thrive, we need to draw new people with new ideas and ways of thinking into the fabric of our organization. We must continue our efforts to reach out to the next generation of psychiatrists to help forge the organization they envision. To do this we must make their participation more visible and relevant within the Assembly.”

The APA Assembly is a deliberative, advisory body to the APA Board of Trustees. The Assembly represents and serves the needs of the district branches and state associations and recommends actions to the Board of Trustees. The Assembly is officiated by a Speaker, Speaker-Elect and Recorder.

The American Psychiatric Association is the oldest medical association in the country founded in 1844. The APA is also the largest psychiatric association in the world with more than 37,000 physician members specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and research of mental illnesses. APA’s vision is to ensure access to quality psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.
