APA Praises Key Progress on Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act and Commitment to Work with All Stakeholders

ARLINGTON, Va., — Congressman Tim Murphy recently issued a statement regarding HR 2646, Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act of 2015, in which he said in part: “We’ve worked around the clock to find common ground and still seek to do all we can to meet the needs of committee members. I strongly encourage all who have specific language to engage so we can reach a consensus on comprehensive mental health legislation that will save lives, prevent crises, fund services and treatment, get people out of jails, and promote recovery before stage four, just as we do with every other chronic disease and condition.”

Today, American Psychiatric Association CEO and Medical Director Saul Levin, M.D., M.P.A., joined other mental health organizations in praising the scheduled markup and the commitment to working collaboratively with all stakeholders. Below is Dr. Levin’s statement in response:

Comprehensive mental health reform is urgently needed in our country, and we’re pleased that HR 2646, the Murphy-Johnson bill, is set for committee action this week. We applaud all of the work that has been done by Chairman Tim Murphy, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson and their 152 bipartisan, cosponsoring colleagues to advance a solution to one of our nation’s most pressing problems. In particular, we are encouraged by Rep. Murphy’s reiteration of his willingness to work with all stakeholders. We urge members of Congress to work together in a bipartisan fashion and seize the timely opportunity that’s before us to improve the nation’s mental health system.
