NCPS President's Message: Closing up 2025

*This month's Letter from the Editor comes in the form of the President's Message from Dr. Saxena.
The past few months have been quite active for members of the Northern California Psychiatric Society as we assess the changes around us, collaborate, and innovate. Our recent Members Meeting in San Mateo saw a strong turnout, bringing together psychiatrists from throughout the region to share updates on advocacy, clinical practices, and community priorities. Rona Hu, chair of the awards committee, did an outstanding job recognizing both psychiatrists and non-physicians who have made significant contributions to our field.
We also enjoyed a delightful Holiday Party in Half Moon Bay at the stunning Maverick’s House, which offered breathtaking ocean views and lovely weather. It was heartwarming to see an array of festive holiday sweaters and witness everyone enjoying themselves. Assemblymember Berman, who sponsored AB 408—a bill aimed at creating a Physician Health and Wellness Program (PHWP) to provide a secure space for impaired physicians to seek help—was honored with the Geri Taylor Memorial Award. At a time when opposition to this bill is unfounded, we are grateful to him for reminding others of the humanity of physicians. Many attendees took the opportunity to engage with him, and he expressed his appreciation for NCPS's support of the bill (click here to see the Holiday Party Recap)
AB 408 strikes a chord with many physicians who face personal health challenges or know colleagues who are struggling, especially with mental health issues that still carry significant stigma. Unfortunately, the current system often feels punitive and hinders rather than helps those who are seeking support. We also remembered and paid a tribute to Nolan Williams, a brilliant psychiatrist at Stanford University who passed away earlier this year and his loss is felt acutely throughout the field of psychiatry. His outstanding work in the field of depression including development of SAINT TMS, ibogaine to name a few, brought relief to thousands of those in suffering. Our hearts go out to his family especially his wife Kristin Raj (a fellow psychiatrist), friends and colleagues.
As we navigate this challenging year, marked by misinformation, skepticism about our work, and social turmoil, I encourage everyone to reflect on the immense influence and impact of the work we do every day. Let us also take this time to heal and rejuvenate and practice the self-compassion we teach others. Wishing you all a joyful holiday season!
