Advocacy Alert - Critical Importance of Accurate Information about Mental Health Treatments
The Northern California Psychiatric Society is providing this information to clarify recent public statements about mental health treatments, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). NCPS is dedicated to promoting accurate public health information and addressing false information regarding biomedical science and healthcare interventions, including vaccines and psychiatric medications.
Decades of scientific evidence show no causal link between SSRIs and mass shootings.
Inaccurate public health information can have dangerous consequences for millions of Americans who rely on effective, evidence-based interventions that can prevent disease, ease suffering, and improve functioning and quality of life. Inaccurate information about psychiatric medications further stigmatizes mental health treatment and deters individuals from seeking essential care. The risks of untreated or undertreated depression and anxiety can be extremely high, including disability and suicide. Decades of research show that psychiatric medications such as SSRIs are overall safe, effective, and beneficial for many individuals. Decisions regarding psychiatric or other medical treatments should involve collaborative and individualized decision-making between patients and their clinicians.
NCPS will continue to advocate for public health guidance that is based on rigorous evidence.
