I have 25+ years in clinical practice as a psychopharmacologist and psychiatrist with a second board certification in Consult-Liaison psychiatry, which involves psychiatric issues in the context of complex medical issues. Early in my career I was a supervisory physician educating residents and medical students from University of California at Davis and Stanford University. Over the last 13 years I have shifted my focus to outpatient treatment.
My approach is to understand every person's individual biology, background and present circumstances. Treatment will be personalized to meet you where you are, reduce symptoms standing in your way, and create changes you want to see. I offer medication management, therapy, or both. I provide care to individuals navigating a wide range of psychiatric concerns, offering expertise in diagnosis, medication management, and therapeutic support for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, ADHD, and other mental health challenges.
The journey you will take to better your mental health is highly personal and I am honored when I can be a part of that process. I offer both in person and confidential video visits. If you are seeking help for the first time or looking for a new psychiatric provider, I am committed to providing thoughtful, evidence-based care tailored to your individual needs.
I offer both in person and tele psychiatry appointments. I do not take health insurance but I will provide you with a bill that you can submit to your health insurance for reimbursement.

Greetings. I am a psychiatrist who has recently opened a new outpatient clinical practice in Lafayette, named the California Neuromodulation Institute (CANMI). I have expertise in both clinical psychopharmacology (including esketamine) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for the treatment of diverse mental health conditions. I am currently available for new referrals for adults with mood, anxiety or psychotic disorders. This includes individuals in concurrent psychotherapy, and/or those who have had significant prior medication trials. Referrals from psychotherapists would typically be patients who may benefit from medication in addition to therapy. Referrals from psychiatrists would typically be patients who have already experienced an inadequate response to at least a few antidepressant trials.
I accept most major commercial insurance plans and cash-pay patients, though not Medi-Cal, Medicare, or VA/active military plans. I also do not provide service to minors, or persons with substance use disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, dementias, and some other conditions. You are welcome to discuss cases with me for more detail about program eligibility.
My background includes teaching TMS and medication management to various clinical disciplines, and I have contributed to the scientific knowledge of how these treatments work, via research at leading medical schools such as UCSF, UCLA and UC Davis. I have published a primer on TMS directed at both prospective patients and referring providers, to aid in understanding this treatment better and what to expect during and after treatment. I'm happy to share this with you on request. My office is easily accessible by car, BART and local bus, in a highly-walkable, low-density and beautiful neighborhood in Lafayette. It is within a 30-minute drive from most of the northern regions of both Alameda county and the Highway 680 corridor in Contra Costa county.
For more information about my program, please visit the CANMI website www.canmi.org. You can refer a patient on this page: https://www.canmi.org/refer-patients/.

Dr. Chiu's practice uses the Biopsychosocial Model, which means the whole person is taken into context when formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan. Biological factors like physical illness, vitamin deficiencies, and hormone imbalances can create patterns which mimic psychiatric conditions. Don't be surprised when your weight and your blood pressure are taken! Psychological factors, a person's beliefs, thoughts, and feelings are also taken into account in a non-judgmental way. The social component includes support networks and also causes of stress such as job conditions and caregiving responsibilities.
