The prevalence of firearms in our communities and the role they play in mass casualties, suicide, and domestic violence has received increased attention in Congress, the California Legislature, and across the country in recent months.  This webinar will provide an overview of the role mental health professionals can play in promoting safety around potential gun violence, including screening approaches and what to be aware of in working with clients/patients who may be at risk; materials and information that can be offered; and legal remedies and issues relevant to professionals, such as the Gun Violence Restraining Order, Welfare and Institutions Code section 5150, and confidentiality.

  • Participants will understand the potential risks associated with access to firearms
  • Participants will recognize legal issues and remedies for mental health professionals when people may be at risk to themselves or others
  • Participants will understand California specific tools including the gun violence restraining order
