ARLINGTON, Va. — Today the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) will hold a confirmation hearing for five nominees, including Elinore McCance-Katz, M.D., Ph.D., and Jerome Adams, M.D., M.P.H. The American Psychiatric Association has endorsed both nominees, and urges the Senate to move forward with their confirmations.

McCance-Katz was nominated for the role of Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, a new position created by the bipartisan 21st Century Cures Act. She is currently the chief medical officer for the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities, and Hospitals. McCance-Katz, a member of the APA, is also a professor of psychiatry and human behavior and professor of behavioral and social sciences at the Alpert Medical School at...

ARLINGTON, Va. – The American Psychiatric Association (APA) today issued the following statement from CEO and Medical Director Saul Levin, M.D., M.P.A., in response to the Senate voting down a bill that would have partially repealed the Affordable Care Act:

“With today’s vote, psychiatrists and other health providers can thank the Senate that our patients will not lose access to health care. The American Psychiatric Association has repeatedly reached out to members of Congress to express our concerns that proposed bills in the House and Senate would take away treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, as well as reduce the number of people with health insurance.

“There are challenges with our current health care system that Congress can and must address to improve the system overall. We need...

ARLINGTON, Va. — The American Psychiatric Association (APA) today announced its opposition to banning transgender Americans from serving in the military.

“The APA stands firmly against discrimination against anyone,” said President-Elect Altha Stewart, M.D. “Banning transgender service members from serving our country harms not just those transgender Americans who have dedicated themselves to service of others, but it unfairly casts a pall over all transgender Americans. Discrimination has a negative impact on the mental health of those targeted.”

The APA in 2012 passed a policy statement that opposed discrimination against transgender people and called for their civil rights to be protected. Transgender people do not have a mental disorder; thus, they suffer no impairment whatsoever in their judgment or...

ARLINGTON, Va. — The American Psychiatric Association (APA) today issued the following statement from APA CEO and Medical Director Saul Levin, M.D., M.P.A., in response to today’s Senate vote to proceed with debate on repealing the ACA:

“We are disappointed that the Senate voted to continue on the path of ACA repeal. If they continue, Congress will effectively take health care away from millions of Americans. I am particularly troubled by provisions of proposed replacement bills that would allow states to opt out of including mental health and substance use disorders as essential health benefits. These bills would also make devastating cuts to the Medicaid program and roll back the Medicaid expansion, which has allowed 1.3 million Americans with serious mental illness and 2.8 million Americans with substance use...
