Alan Newman, M.D. is the Chair of Psychiatry at the California Pacific Medical
Center in San Francisco, where he also serves as Director of Residency
Training in Psychiatry. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University
of California San Francisco, where he teaches in the Forensic Psychiatry
Fellowship Program.
Dr. Newman attended medical school and residency at the
University of Arkansas, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr.
Newman was a 1996 Rappeport Fellow of the American Academy of Psychiatry
and the Law and the 1997 Daniel X. Freedman Congressional Fellow,
where he served on the Health Staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Labor
and Human Resources.
Dr. Newman completed his Fellowship in Forensic Neuropsychiatry at Tulane
University in 1998. He is board certified in Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry.
Dr. Newman was previously on the faculty of the Tulane Department of
Psychiatry and Neurology from 1999 - 2005, where his positions included
Director of Medical Student Education and the Director of the Fellowship in
Forensic Neuropsychiatry. From 2005-2014, he was at Georgetown University
Medical School, where he was Director of Residency Training and Director
of the Forensic Psychiatry Program.
Dr. Newman lectures extensively on forensic issues and has published articles
and book chapters on a variety of forensic psychiatric topics, including cyberstalking,
forensic hypnosis, and the insanity defense.
Dr. Newman was recognized in 2004 as the “Best Teacher in a Forensic Fellowship
Program” by the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. He
has served on the Executive Council of the American Academy of Psychiatry
and the Law.
