2026 Instructions for Applying for DFAPA Status

If you received a message from the NCPS DFAPA Committee about your eligibility for DFAPA Status, please follow the steps below. This process has multiple steps, so review everything carefully.
 

The Basics:

The application process has two main steps:

  1. Preliminary Application: Reviewed by the NCPS DFAPA Committee.
  2. Final Application: Submitted to the APA via their DFAPA Portal.

The NCPS DFAPA Committee will review your preliminary application and provide feedback. You don't need letters of recommendation for this initial step. Once you receive feedback, you can complete and submit your final application to the APA.

 

The Details:

 

Step 1: Download Application Materials

You need to download three items:

  • DFAPA Requirements Click to Download
    • A list of requirements to obtain DFAPA status  
  • DFAPA Application Guide: Click to Download
    • This guide provides detailed instructions for the DFAPA application process.
  • DFAPA Application Do’s and Don’ts: Click to Download
    • A brief list of tips for the DFAPA application process.
  • Preliminary Nomination Application: Click to Download
    • Complete this by April 30th for review by the NCPS DFAPA Committee.

 

Step 2: Complete Your Preliminary Application

Fill out the preliminary application using the guidelines from the materials you downloaded. You don't need recommendation letters at this stage. The NCPS DFAPA Committee will advise you on the next steps.

 

Step 3: Submit Your Preliminary Application

Email your completed preliminary application to info@ncps.org by April 30, 2026.

 

Step 4: Await Feedback

The DFAPA Committee will review your application and provide feedback by May 31st. They will suggest ways to strengthen your application and outline the next steps.

 

Step 5: Decide Your Path

Based on the feedback, decide whether to proceed with the DFAPA application or opt for FAPA status.

DFAPA Next Steps:

  • Finalize your DFAPA application with recommendation letters and submit it online to the APA by July 1, 2026.
    • Apply any recommended edits from the DFAPA Committee.
    • Follow the APA's instructions to obtain your letters of recommendation.
    • Submit your complete application and letters of recommendation via the APA DFAPA Portal by July 1, 2026.

FAPA Next Steps:

  • The due date for Fellow applications is September 1, 2026.
  • The FAPA application process is straightforward and doesn't require a preliminary application.
